An 82‑year‑old retired army officer from Pune, bedridden for a year with back pain, walks again after complex surgery by Dr. Khandelwal’s team.
Case Study – KIMS Hospital, Thane
A 34-year-old woman visited the Department of Neurosurgery at KIMS Hospital, Thane, with
persistent headaches and visual issues. Clinical and radiological tests revealed a suprasellar
mass, initially presumed to be a pituitary adenoma — a common benign tumor. Hormonal tests were
normal, and she was prepared for transsphenoidal surgery.
Intraoperatively, however, the surgical team discovered a well-formed abscess rather than a
tumor. The abscess was drained and the cavity thoroughly irrigated. Following consultation with
the Infectious Disease team, she was started on targeted intravenous antibiotics.
The patient showed remarkable postoperative recovery, with complete resolution of preoperative
symptoms and no new neurological or hormonal complications. A follow-up MRI confirmed
decompression of the optic nerves, and her hormonal levels remained within normal limits.
This case is notable for its rarity and the timely surgical decision-making involved. It
underscores the importance of expert intraoperative judgment and seamless collaboration among
Neurosurgery, Endocrinology, and ENT departments.
The patient is now symptom-free, stable, and ready for discharge. She will continue to be
monitored through follow-ups and imaging.
